I wish I was in grade school ~ When there was NO FINALS! :-)

Here we go, gearing up for the FINALS! I was thinking about this and I reminisced about how nice it was to be in elementary school because there we NO FINALS! Just playing and having fun! 🙂 WHY CAN’T IT BE LIKE THAT NOW! 🙂

FINALS~ that word sounds so harsh. This is your FINAL chance to prove you learned something. Whew, what pressure. BUT…….Then again, if you did all you were supposed to do during the first 11 weeks of class, it should be a breeze right? Right?

We put so much pressure on ourselves during exams. It’s almost like we don’t trust ourselves. That we don’t believe that we know the material. That the earth is going to open up and swallow us whole for one exam. Think about that.

I do the same thing. I sweat and stress and drive myself crazy during finals. Maybe they ought to change the word from FINALS to ALMOST TIME TO PARTY! 🙂

You have done everything you are going to do and everything that you can do. It is what it is at this point.  Just imagine what you will be doing a week later. Maybe relaxing, getting caught up on family/friend time. Finals will be a distant memory then. It will be time to focus on the next leg of your journey. That may be GRADUATION!~~ It may be focusing on the next quarter of classes, or a new job prospect. THERE IS LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL. Did I just say that? LOL.

Clear your mind, do your meditation, breathe and TRUST IN YOURSELF!

Good Luck, YOU WILL DO GREAT!

I was talking to a fellow student last night before class and he said something profound to me. He was talking about how his two daughters were emulating him by “studying”  when when daddy studies. The profound part was the were 4&2!  They would grab their books when he had to study and sit on his office floor and read and color. The two year old would mumble as though she was reading too. What an incredible example he was setting for his children and he didn’t even know it. 🙂

This doesn’t have to pertain to young children only. I have spoken to so many older adults who have returned to school to be an example to their older children that it’s never too late. They talk about the pride they feel when their grown children say “I can’t do this,” and they now have the ability to say “look at me, sure you can.”

Some feel they disappointed their children because they waited so long and  didn’t make education an important aspect of life. Now they can look in the mirror and say they did it.

I’m one of those people too. I was so busy raising a family and trying to survive day to day that I didn’t place importance where it needed to be. I taught my children how to survive but not how to use education to live. Now I have. When people look at me from my past they now see a successful person with integrity. My children can be proud of me. My son talks about how he felt at my graduation and the  pride was overwhelming. “My moms a college graduate!”

It’s never to late. Whether they’re babies or adults they look up to you. Make them and yourself PROUD! 🙂

You’ve worked hard~CONGRATS!

Most of us are getting ready for that dreaded word FINALS! The end is near. For some it’s the end of journey, for others it’s the end of our first quarter/semester. For some it’s the end of our undergraduate work and the beginning of graduate school. Wherever you are at take a moment to pat yourself on the back-Go ahead pat yourself and say GOOD JOB! 🙂 . You deserve it.  You worked hard, studied hard, slept very little. You made it.

Some of you are preparing for GRADUATION! 🙂  YES! You may have your cap and gown, your invitations are out and you are EXCITED! Be proud hold your had up high. Picture Graduation day. Imagine yourself all dressed up standing in line with the other graduates and hearing those words LET’S GO GRADUATES! (I just got goosebumps). Then you hear that music and you begin the procession of walking in front of all those people cheering. Some of you will year up and some of you will smile so much your mouth will hurt. 🙂

Rejoice in whatever stage you are at. YOU EARNED IT! 🙂

KEEP MOVING FORWARD………..

When I read this I thought about all of us college students. Think about it, you rise above the rest to obtain your degrees when others say it’s too much.  You are NOT a quitter, you are NOT the person you were before. You are BETTER! You have CHARACTER and a PURPOSE!

I think so often about my past; growing up in a severely abusive home, alcoholism and drug addiction, to my disastrous first marriage. I was called a loser back then and I never thought that I would ever amount to anything. I struggled every day with low self-worth and constantly trying to PROVE that wasn’t me. That I had a good heart and good soul. That I was indeed smart.

It wasn’t until I walked in to Strayer University and started my very first class that it changed.  As each year completed, my self-worth and confidence grew. It grows stronger and stronger each year.

Now picture yourself. Do you remember the first time you walked into class? The overwhelming fear? The questioning of your sanity? 🙂 But here you are~ Another quarter down and closer to graduation if not graduating yet. You know why? ou DIDN’T QUIT! YOU DIDN’T MAKE EXCUSES! You continue to push forward. YOU ARE A CHAMPION! A Champion in your own right! You deserve the accolades.  Enjoy them, let them re-energize you. ALLOW yourself to experience them. You are not the person you used to be, you are becoming an awesome person. It doesn’t matter anymore if you had a rough start and made some serious mistakes. It’s all about who you are NOW!

Finally you can hold your head up high and look people in the eyes. Smile with dignity and know the obstacles you have overcome. BE PROUD!

Eliminate EXCUSES from your vocabulary, that’s NOT who you are anymore. You are a SUCCESS! YOU ARE DRIVEN! YOU ARE AWESOME!

Enjoy!

This is a continuation of yesterday’s blog about working hard to get your degree. This picture reminds me of the times my printer blew up right when a final paper was due and I had only hours to submit it. I remember the stress that caused me. Also the time when my laptop crashed during an exam (which you can only enter once). I was petrified but I did what I had to do. I had to borrow a friend computer which did not have any of the programs I needed but she allowed me to install whatever I needed. I had to contact my advisor and prove what happened and they allowed me to start the exam over.

Going to college means getting your hands dirty, not in the literal sense. All of the writing and typing and correcting that you have to do. Your hands will hurt at times, your brain will hurt as well. Your back will act up and you will lose sleep. That is all about “CREATING”  a future for yourself. It is like molding clay. Each year you complete is another part of the mold  until your piece is finished. Yep FINISHED! Whoo Hoo!

Anything worthwhile is not easy. I cannot count the times I wanted to just stop. Pulling my hair out and feeling incredibly overwhelmed. I would stomp around the house, cuss and scream. It seemed like college was never going to end. Then my husband would say to me, “this isn’t high school and the further you go the harder it is going to be.” I would give him the evil eye because I knew he was right.  I would take my little temper tantrum, and then pull myself together. It’s ok to have a meltdown here and there. It actually refreshes you.

When it seems too much, take a breather, go for a walk, listen to music or just take a nap. You will get it all done because you desire to be somebody and be successful. You want to be a “WINNER!”

I am saying this to you for myself as well. I am starting my Master’s program and from what everyone tells me it is a bear. That’s ok, I love the challenge. So whatever level you are at with your degree, say what I say to myself all of the time “This time next year I will have my Associates or my Bachelors, or Master’s degree.” You will be one year further. A year goes by incredibly fast.

Don’t cut yourself short. You started school for a reason. Now allow yourself to get your hands dirty and go through the trials and tribulations. It does not last forever.  If you have a good attitude, you will enjoy your journey instead of dreading it.

Continued success to all of you!  I will be happy to mentor anyone who needs a little boost. You can reach me by email: kgerber4230@yahoo.com or Facebook : Kathie Gerber. I would love to share your journey with you.

Accomplish Great Things ~ GET YOUR DEGREE!

Accomplish Great Things ~ GET YOUR DEGREE!.

Accomplish Great Things ~ GET YOUR DEGREE!

To accomplish great things not only requires all of the above, but also requires A DEGREE!  Having your degree lets you stand above the mediocre. It demonstrates your drive and desire to become the best you can.

I often hear I am stopping at my Bachelor’s because I am just tired of going to school. WHAT? REALLY? Think about that a minute. All that says to me is that you are in fact mediocre. Master’s & PhD’s make a loud and clear statement that you are top-notch. That you want to be the BEST. That you’re willing to work even harder and longer to achieve your goals.

When I was a hiring agent and heard that excuse (because that is what it is) I immediately disqualified that person. Why would a company want to hire someone who got “TIRED” of working so hard?

Of course school is hard, long and exhausting. If it was easy everyone would be doing it. I again revert back to what Strayer University’s motto is “ONLY THE DRIVEN!” Those three little words say it all! If you are not driven to go all the way with school, then how are you going to go all the way to the top at a job?

Don’t make excuses. Dust yourself off and buckle down. That degree means more than you possibly know. It says more than you think about your character. So does your GPA. Don’t settle for “just passing.”  set high standards for yourself and go for it! Excuses are that – EXCUSES!

You can do this. Rise to the top! Be the best you can be. MAKE YOURSELF PROUD! 🙂

Enjoy your journey!

Peace
